Nor'Easter - Oct 15

Let the posting begin, for the Nor'Easter beginning tonight and lasting through tomorrow. Flood watch for most of northern New England. The National Weather Service in Albany has even put up New England's first winter storm watch of the new season. It's in effect for elevations above 2,000 feet in western MA, southern VT, and eastern NY. Wind advisories are in effect for a large part of New England.

Do we know what kind of winds to expect tomorrow and Saturday?

I still have my boat in and I need to get it past some shallow water to get it to the marina. With the dam at Lakeport releasing almost no water for this week and next week, the 2" or so rain fall is good news for me. That said, I hope there is no flooding.

This storm will bring windy conditions to the coast and to the higher grounds. How much wind is a good weather discussion right now. When it rains hard, the rain can bring some of the higher winds down to the ground. I think that will happen from time to time during this storm, perhaps gusts to 30 or 35 MPH from the east, then to the north, then the west.

Bottom line is this is a good early season nor'easter passing a bit to the east of the lake. If this was winter, it would likely be a snow to rain event, with some snow on the back side.

Just looked at several web cams and it seems a bit rainy and windy around the lake. I love watching storms on the lake. It makes one appreciate mother nature's power.

To the WeatherCam site I also added a link to the Lakes Region fire dispatch (in the left hand menu column on the main page.) When the weather is getting feisty you can listen to streaming audio of their radio -- calls for trees on wires & houses, flooded roads, accidents, and all that other cheerful stuff. The agency is the official fire dispatch for most of central NH, from Warren/Wentworth and Campton/Thornton southeastward to New Durham and Strafford. It's a huge area.

For those who are away from the lake but wondering what's going on, the fire dispatch radio can be a nice supplement to the webcams. Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid just upgraded its listen online feature so that the number of online listeners is no longer limited. They have different audio players available now.

As for this storm, the lights are flickering this morning. Peak wind gust at Black Cat is 21 mph, so far. The center of the storm is nearing. The wind is pretty light but it's bouncing all over the directions. I think that's a function of the center being so nearby. Radar loop has the center of the circulation over SE New Hampshire. Models say the storm will track from this position ENE into the Gulf of Maine and then into the Maritimes. As the center starts to move away from us -- strengthening as it goes -- I suspect the wind will settle on one direction and become more meaningful.

It's a very chilly storm, an early season nor'easter. Snowing on Mount Washington with 2 inches on the ground. Official forecast for Lincoln NH calls for snow tonight. Wouldn't be surprised to see snow on top of Red Hill and Gunstock tomorrow morning, either.

Looking at the station reports to the south of us, coupled with the strengthening of the storm, as CLA has pointed out, it will be more windy after the storm passes than it has been during the storm. These winds will be from the west and may gust to over 40 MPH. They should blow all night and well into Saturday.

Be careful out there if you are boating.

I had 2 inches in my rain gauge in RI this morning I sent it all Northward to The Lake.

A few good gusts and pelting rain, and the lake came up what seems to be 3-4" in just a few hours. Overall, the lake region was spared. There was even a bit of blue sky around mid-day.

There was very heavy rain this afternoon in the Alton & Wolfeboro areas. A neighbor here in West Alton told me his rain gauge registered almost 4" of rain between last night and this evening.

Yup! Once again this local area got spared by what was otherwise a big storm. To qualify for 'bomb' status, a storm must be non-tropical in origin (hurricanes don't count as bombs because they're in a class by themselves) and have a 24-millibar air pressure drop in 24 hours. This one dropped 30 millibars. It has raged all around us, but we've been right near its center the whole time.

The overall storm total in the rain gauge here on the hillside in west Alton was 4.7". This appears to be more than at the airport and on the lake. The brooks are full so that will add some to the lake. Would have been a nice snow storm!

It was for some at higher elevations, as CLA had predicted. Mt Washington had over 5 inches and the morning news showed people in VT making snow angels.
