Yes, you can do this.

But then you have a maintenance point, the battery may need periodic cleaning due to corrosion on the contacts...marine environments usually have a lot of moisture and vibrations to deal with.

Soldering the live battery isn't difficult if it has leads on it, and you are careful not to short it out during the installation. Also be careful to disconnect the GPS power during the installation.
