Aero TV files for bankruptcy

Some folks have talked about Aero TV on this forum in the past. In yesterday's Boston Globe, it was reported that Aero has filed for bankruptcy.

It is about money, not technology

This is bad news for the lakes region. The TV networks, with some likely back-room help from the cable companies, funded and won a supreme legal battle to delay the internet from delivering our choices of entertainment. Internet TV is inevitable, but the business models are not yet worked out. Why bad news? Much of the region lacks an over-the-air digital TV signal, and there are many gaps in cable service. Some rural areas are not densely populated enough to be profitable for the cable companies to expand into, and too hilly for satellite TV. There are gaps in internet too, but DSL brings internet to many of the cable gaps. Aereo came up with a way to deliver network TV shows to homes served by the internet. Their sins were taking customers from the cable companies and not giving rebroadcast money to the networks. Next year, after HBO starts selling directly to internet subscribers, the shift should accelerate. NFL football is the big stumbling block to cutting the cable TV subscription. It is not about technology - it is about money.

This is a shame. We had Aereo from the beginning until it was pulled after the supreme court ruling. We really liked it. We cannot pull anything in with an antenna and have Direct TV, which I guess we will be keeping for now.
